Centennial Soiree at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden

This past Thursday evening August 12 was the Linnaean Libation League’s Centennial Soiree. The celebration was held for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s 100th birthday. We did not have a speaking role, but our fashions were included in this video clip on the Long Island Channel 12 news. Here are some vintage styled photographs from the [...]

Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island

We spent the day on Governor’s Island with Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra at the 5th Bi-Annual Jazz Age Lawn Party, complete with vintage clothing vendors, a hopping dance floor, fashion shows, a tug-of-war contest, old-fashioned cocktails, and a showcase of vintage cars. Why Not Buy Something Old-Fashioned and Glittery?

We’re  venturing across the East River today to focus on one of our favorite sources for Victorian and Art Deco eye candy. The Upper Rust Antiques, on East 9th Street, is a more intense version of what we’d like our apartment to look like, featuring a assortment of new and old accoutrements that artfully blend country [...]

Overlooked New York

Overlooked New York is a whimsical portrait project by Zina Saunders, who has compiled her illustrations of some of the most interesting unknown people in New York into a fascinating cast of characters. New Year’s Postcard to Bushwick Ave

We leave 2009 behind with a postcard from 100 years ago. It’s always fun to trace the history of old artifacts, and with the wealth of resources available in New York City, it’s often easier than one might think to piece the puzzle together. The postcard was sent to P. L. Ackerman at 1576 Bushwick [...]

Australian 20th Century Mugshots

“Crooks Like Us” by Peter Doyle is a fascinating looking book on the underbelly of the Australian 20th century. We first read about it at a time to get. If you’re stuck acting as a Secret Santa for that persky co-worker who can’t seem to get enough vintage mugshot coffee table books, you’re in luck. Check [...]

1897 Bicycle Ads and Illustrations

We find it rather ironic that today we look at Transportation Alternatives as a grassroots, ground-up campaign. During the late 19th century, bicycle riders in Brooklyn were a dime a dozen. These riders did not have to stage Critical Mass protests, as bicycling was a necessary and accepted means of transportation. Scores of bicycle ads ran [...]
